Sonya's Intro
Do you have an event in your history that completely changed your life? I do. I was standing in a line, waiting to send a fax, when I saw it. The object that turned my life around.
We got off to a rocky start, financially speaking. We married at a very young age and had our children at a young age as well. Of course, they are a blessing in our lives, but financially speaking, it is a challenge to get ahead - make a living even - and raise three small children.
Doug, my husband, joined the military and I stayed with the kids. Military pay, especially early in your enlistment career, is subpar at best. We struggled from month to month, sometimes making a decision about which bill we should pay, power or phone? Groceries or fuel? We lived a very frugal lifestyle…. We had to! We only had one car, and an old one at that. We rarely ate out, and didn't pay for extra's such as cable TV. Even with this frugal lifestyle, we got behind. We had to us our credit cards to get through the end of the month. Month after month, this adds up to trouble!
Back to the life changing event… I was standing in line and I noticed a book. It was a rich dad book, "Retire Young, Retire Rich." I took that boo home and we devoured it over the next three days. We had caught the fever. We knew that somehow, we would pursue financial freedom.
We started our investment career by getting into building new homes on speculation that they would sell. At the time, we were in the middle of a big real estate run up, so we were fortunately always able to sell for a profit. We also accumulated a few single family rentals during that time frame.
After a few years of this, we realized two things:
1) We were still working! While our net worth was getting a boust from all those houses we were selling, it was a lot of hard work! Where was this passive income we had been hearing about?
2) Single Family Rentals are nice… they are a start… but it takes a lot of houses at $200 a month income to reach our goal. Single Family Rentals also take work to manage. We started imagining what it would be like to own dozens and dozens of rental houses.
It was time to consider other options. How can we reduce our work load and increase our passive income? We tossed around ideas such as self storage, apartment buildings, commercial buildings with stable triple net leases.
The last two options felt out of reach at the time. It would take a lot of capital (money we didn't have) to buy an apartment building or a commercial office building or retail space. Self Storage, however might be attainable. Could we get into self storage with the limited capital we had?
Around this same time, someone pointed out a piece of property that was for sale. It was a single wide on a little over two acres. It had highway frontage and no zoning or covenant restrictions.
We were able to acquire the land, and we started building our storage unit business. As time went on, we realized that we had stumbled upon a little known formula that creates wealth rapidly. It is such a powerful tool that it can make millions of dollars over a relatively short period of time.
